The antidiabetic effect of Momordica charantia has been confirmed by STZ induced diabetic experiment. Bitter Melon Extract can induce the increase of blood glucose accompanied by the increase of blood urea, serum creatinine, serum cholesterol and free fatty acids, as well as the decrease of liver glycogen reserve and the loss of body weight. The ground Momordica charantia seeds mixed in rabbit feed can reduce blood glucose level and blood lipid. Capsicum Oleoresin cells of the pancreas can be activated by this treatment. Alloxan can induce diabetes by destroying all B-cells in the pancreas. This suggests that the hypoglycemic activity of Momordica charantia may be mediated by some Flax lignans of these cells. This has been partially confirmed by experiments by Willy Huida and her colleagues. These researchers demonstrated that the water extract from the immature fruit of Momordica charantia is an effective stimulant to stimulate insulin release from pancreatic B-cells.
In a clinical trial designed to evaluate the effect of Momordica charantia on glucose tolerance in patients with diabetes, the Gardenia Yellow of Momordica charantia was found to significantly increase glucose tolerance in 73% of the investigated patients, while the other 27% did not respond.
